Doc Black Student Competiton
UPDATE: 22/04/2010
Thanks to all who entered the art competition, espeically Ryton Comprehensive School, who participated as a school project and sent us in some fantastic entries (my inner child, who couldn’t even draw a circle round a coin, was pretty jealous in fact). In light of all their hard work we awarded the three best designs with gift vouchers for our Doc Black retail stores. So congratulations are in order for Laura Lynn, who recieved a £25 gift voucher, and Annie Hall and Eleanor Brown, who recieved a £10 gift voucher. Well done you talented individuals!
However, overall due to the general low amount of entries we have decided to abandon this idea for now, with no overall winner. It is something we are definately interested in pursuing again and over the next year or so we may well run something similiar, but until then, keep watching the skis (there’s always time for an obscure Simpsons reference – it’s from the X-Files episode, fact fans)
DOC BLACK DESIGN A T-SHIRT COMPETITION“It’s impossible to get any experience as no one will give you any, because you don’t have any experience!” A familiar lament, uttered by students up and down the land. Because the day will come when the real world beckons and watching both showings of Neighbours a day is no longer a valid life-style choice and experience will be greatly needed, but in short supply.
Attaining the elusive beast known as ‘Experience’ (the rarity earns in the capital letter) can be particularly hard going if one has chosen a creative or artistic means to earn a crust.
However, occasionally, Experience will surprise everyone and show up out of the blue. And even more occasionally, Experience will bring it’s good friend Opportunity along with it. This is also a rare one – so, basically, imagine if the Loch Ness Monster and the Yeti got together and offered YOU an amazing chance and the first stepping stone to the career you really want. You’d be pretty pleased, or scared, or surprised, or thinking about sacking in the art – you’ve found the Loch Ness Monster and the Yeti – you’re going to be rich! But don’t do that, because then you couldn’t enter the Doc Black Design A T-Shirt Competition!
So, who is Doc Black? Well, clearly nothing to do with the medical profession, so please don’t ask us to cure any ailments you may have! But if you are looking for the best and latest in alternative fashion you are definitely in the right place. We are an independent clothing company operating in the North East of England who are all sorts of passionate about the alternative scene and wish to cater to all the other lovely people out there who are as well! We sell a wide range of fantastic gothic/punk/emo/alternative clothing and accessories, for men, women and children, and are looking for talented up and coming artists to design a t-shirt for us to sell in our two retail shops, and on our online store. The design will also be distributed through our sister wholesale company and be sold throughout Europe and the rest of the world. And, if we like you enough (and odds are we will) you could be designing many more t-shirts for us in the future! We’re very keen to help establish new talent, and where better to find it than the North East!
The deadline for the competition is March 26th. The winning entry will receive £200 and their design printed onto t-shirts to be sold in the Doc Black retail shops. Entries should be sent, along with a completed application form, to Doc Black, 5 Saltmeadows Road, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE8 3AH
GUIDELINES AND TIPS:
•Doc Black primarily sells alternative clothing and the design should reflect that. This still leaves you with a huge scope with themes such as fantasy, horror, gothic, the macabre, cyber punk, tattoos, fairies, steam punk etc…
•To get a better idea, Google some of these artists to see what we mean: Anne Stokes, Victoria Francis, Andrew Dobell, Amy Brown, Jasmine Becket-Griffith, Mark Bolt, James Ryman…but please don’t confine yourself, let your imagination run riot!
•Feel free to also visit our retail shops for inspiration. We are based in Eldon Square in Sidgate (between New Look and Schuh), and in the Metrocentre in The Boulevard. Our staff are friendly and accommodating so don’t be afraid to ask them any questions you may have. Also have a look round our website now you’re here, and don’t forget to print out your application form, which can be found at the bottom of this page.
•You can use whatever artistic style and tools you wish to create your design, the image may be sent either on CD or hard copy. However, you must make sure your design can be reproduced digitally with a minimum of 300 DPI, this is so the design can be converted onto the t-shirts without losing any of the quality.
•The winning artist will receive £200 and their design will be printed onto a t-shirt to be sold in our shops. However, depending the quality of the designs we receive we may well in interested with working with more of you in the future, so its win-win really!
•Most importantly, enjoy, and have fun with it! This is a great opportunity to get a leg up into a difficult market-place.
